Browns Valley

Of all the places to settle down in Napa Valley, one neighborhood stands out from the others:  Browns Valley.

Browns Valley is divided into four sections: Central, East, South and West.

The Browns Valley Central Neighborhood is bounded on the west and south by Browns Valley Road, on the east by Westview Drive, and on the north by Redwood Road. It was originally part of a large valley of farms with mainly orchards and prunes. Browns Valley Road was named and was one of the first improved roads in western Napa in 1911. That improvement was paid for by the neighbors that the road serviced. It is known for its friendly neighborhood families and parks.

Browns Valley East Neighborhood is boarded on the north by Redwood Road, on the east by the Napa Creek and the Pueblo Park neighborhood, on the south by Valley Wood Lane and the City limit line, and on the west by Westview Drive. It was originally part of a large valley of farms with mainly orchards and prunes. Browns Valley Road was named and was one of the first improved roads in western Napa in 1911. That improvement was paid for by the neighbors that the road serviced. It is known for its friendly neighborhood families and parks.

The Browns Valley South Neighborhood is bounded on the west by Skylark Way and the City of Napa limit. It is bounded on the south and east by the City of Napa limit. It is bounded on the north by Browns Valley and Partrick Roads. It was originally part of a large valley of farms with mainly orchards and prunes. It has the area elementary school and is known for its friendly neighborhood families and parks. Many of the residences enjoy views of the rolling hills, pastureland, and vineyards that surround the area.

The Browns Valley West Neighborhood is bounded on the west and north by the western and northern city limit line, on the south by the Timberhill Park, and on the east by Browns Valley Road. It is nestled in the hills primarily and many of the houses, in both the newer and older developments, enjoy sweeping views of various areas of the valley.

History

Early history

Dating back to the mid to late-1800s, Browns Valley is rich with history. The valley was named after the Napa County surveyor in the 1840s, John E. Brown. As for how the foremost Brown gained ownership of the land, there are several different stories.

One story detailed Brown gambling with the former landowner, Salvador Vallejo. With nothing left to bet, Brown used one of his greatest assets as a last resort – his horse and surrey, a set which was most popular in the late 1800s. Fortunately for Brown, he was dealt a great hand, and knowing how much Vallejo coveted the horse and surrey leant a great advantage to him. Vallejo eagerly and naively matched Brown’s bet with the valley now known as Browns Valley, and the rest is history.

Another curious part of Browns Valley’s history is their ghost stories. One such story is recalled by a previous owner of Brown’s residence in the late 1900s. The story details this particular spirit only showing up around the holidays, presumably due to the nearby Christmas Tree business known as “Andy’s Christmas Tree Farm”, which was part of the property in the 1950s. However, the following owner wished to install a swimming pool and tennis court, and had to clear out the remaining Christmas trees in order to do so. Afterwards, the jolly Christmas spirit was never heard from again.

Over time as Browns Valley and the surrounding areas grew more populous, a system for education became increasingly necessary. One of the first schools to open was a one-room school, Browns Valley School. A former student of the original school recalled that at one point, only 26 students attended the school, with eight grades. However, with the vast increase in population over the last century, a one-room school was no longer enough. In 1960, the former school was torn down, and in its place the current Browns Valley School was built.

Geography and environment

The fall is pleasant and many people come to visit Napa at this time. The winters are quite wet and chilly and flooding can be a major problem. Nighttime temperatures often drop below freezing. The rainy season is from October to April and occasionally into May. Snow is rare. Some extremes are, a record high temperature of 113°F and a low temperature of 14°F. The most rainfall in one year was 51.24″ in 1983 and the least amount of rainfall was 6.74″ in 2013. The most rainfall in one month was 16.13″ in December 1955.
